Shadows and Light Within: Performance and Panel

Registration for this event closes June 6th.

Many people suffering mental trauma feel shame and guilt leading them to marginalized lives within our community. Shadows and Light Within: Untold Stories is a creative approach to help those with traumatic histories manage their trauma. Ten individuals with lived experiences within the intersections of trauma, mental health, and the court system, have worked with mentor coaches to develop their personal narrative into a professional theatre production that will inform the broader community.

Afterwards, a moderated panel of child welfare and mental health professionals will explore with the audience how the arts and other creative programming fits within the mental health and family law systems. Together, the panel and audience will reflect on the importance of helping people share their narratives as a means to increase their executive functioning skills and improve functioning for daily life.

Event Logistics:

Times (all times in Central):

1:00 - 2:15     Video Theatre Performance - Shadows & Light Within: Untold Stories
       A recorded ensemble performance comprised of voice, movement and song sharing inspiring stories based on the lived experiences of individuals in the community who have experienced trauma and court involvement.

2:15 - 2:30     Break

2:30 - 3:00     Presentation by Dr. Paula Ray
       Dr. Ray will discuss the theoretical foundation of the Shadows and Light project, as well as subsequent evaluation findings from the project.

3:00 - 4:00     Panel
           Following the presentation panelists will discuss the performance and the concept of community-based creative programming to increase executive functioning for individuals and families involved in the legal system.
